Betty A. Smith, 87, of Burlington, died at 2:40 PM Thursday, December 3, 2009, at the Great River Medical Center - Klein Center in Burlington.

Born July 31, 1922, in Richland, IA, she was the daughter of Willard Vernon and Gail True Mills Ward. On December 13, 1941, she married Donald Bruce Smith in Kahoka, MO with transportation furnished by Donald's father's "borrowed" old Chevy. Donald died July 12, 1980.

Betty had over 60 jobs in her lifetime, mostly clerical.
She was a graduate of Richland High School.
She was baptized into the Christian Church in Richland, IA. Her happiest times were spent with her grandsons, usually fishing and camping.

Survivors include one son, Gary (Melinda) Smith of Burlington; three grandchildren, Ethan, Micah, and Aaron Smith; six great-grandchildren, Matthew, Chelsea, Raina, Rikki, Austin, and Layne; one brother-in-law, John Carter of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Bob Ward, three sisters, Arlene Stewart, Jeri Carter, and Marilyn Nebergall.

As per the request of Mrs. Smith, her body has been deeded to the University of Iowa.
A Celebration of Life Service for Betty will be at a later date at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Burlington with the Reverend Roger Mohr, Minister officiating.
A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
