Eugene Joseph Menke, 84, of Burlington, passed away at 8:44 AM Monday, February 15, 2010, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 8, 1925, in Lee County, IA, he was the son of Raymond Bernard and Frances Haffner Menke. On April 17, 1948, he married Darlene Mary Brown in West Point. She died September 23, 1999. |
Gene worked for J.I. Case Co. retiring in 1990 after 34 years.
He graduated from Houghton High School in Houghton, Iowa.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II.
He was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington, and Knights of Columbus #568. He enjoyed nature, bird watching, hunting, fishing, camping, auctions, gardening, playing pool, was a gun enthusiast, and enjoyed visiting with his friends and family.

Survivors include one son, David (Kathy) Menke of Burlington; one daughter, Vicki (Art) Morris of Davenport, IA; two grandsons, Michael Menke and Chad Henry; three granddaughters, Kimberly LaFauce, Lori Hoffman, and Kristin Morris; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Cletus Menke of Denmark, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, Darlene, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Paulette, one brother, and one sister.

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Gene will be 10:00 AM Friday, February 19, 2010, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Very Rev. Father David G. Steinle as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Hass-Thielen Community Room following the interment.
A memorial has been established for SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington. |
