James N. Hightower, 81, of Burlington, died at 10:44 AM Saturday, May 1, 2010, at his home in Burlington surrounded by his family.

Born September 19, 1928, in Sperry, he was the son of Ray A. and Lillian O. Granaman Hightower. On July 3, 1948, he married Hazel D. Lucas in Burlington. She died July 4, 1969.

Jim was a Self-employed truck driver and farmer.
He graduated in 1946 from Sperry High School
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War.
He was of the Protestant faith. He enjoyed fishing, attending auctions, mushroom hunting, watching the eagles on the river, and gardening, especially tomatoes. He had sold tomatoes and other vegetables for the last 15 years from his house.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice K. (Gary) Fenton and Donna M. (Ronald) Diercks both of Burlington; one son, Charles James Hightower, Sr. of Galesburg, 16 grandchildren, Mindi, LaMar, Joy, Gwendolyn, Heidi, Tina, Tamra, Terri, Amanda, David, Mary, Rachel, Charles, Jr., Jennifer, Ellie, Sam; 29 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill (Janet) Hightower of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donald and Jack Hightower. |
Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, May 3, 2010 at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home.
The Funeral Service for Mr. Hightower will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Tom Smith officiating. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Hass-Thielen Community Room following the interment.
